The three main causes of critical illness are heart attacks, various forms of cancer and stroke. They account for approximately 85% of claims.
However various companies add on another 20 or so illnesses to fill in that 15% gap in that coverage.
But is it worth the extra money? Unless your family history dictates that wider coverage may be beneficial, you need to consider whether the extra money is worth it. Whatever you decide, you need some form of critical illness insurance.
It is hard to think about, but most people do not have a great amount of savings and a critical illness can mean some lean times. It has certainly happened that after the savings and RRSPs have been cashed, that it is ncessary to sell the home.
Don't let this happen to you. Get some coverage for something that probably will never happen. But if it does, you are prepared with the best coverage possible, critical illness insurance.
