WHAT ARE HEDGE FUNDS?

There are many definitions of a hedge fund. Some define the term quite loosely and refer to any fund that uses an unconventional strategy or set of strategies that differ from traditional investment practices as a hedge fund.
However, a true hedge fund is one with disciplined investment strategies that place the primary emphasis on minimizing risk while attempting to deliver superior returns regardless of market conditions. These funds diversify investments among different hedging strategies in order to deliver absolute returns in both up and down markets.

Hedge Funds Explained

A hedge fund is a fund that can take both long and short positions, use arbitrage, buy and sell undervalued securities, trade options or bonds, and invest in almost any opportunity in any market where it foresees impressive gains at reduced risk. Hedge fund strategies vary enormously -- many hedge against downturns in the markets -- especially important today with volatility and anticipation of corrections in overheated stock markets.

The primary aim of most hedge funds is to reduce volatility and risk while attempting to preserve capital and deliver positive returns under all market conditions.
